The Iron Throne – Game of Thrones !

In 2011, production company and broadcaster HBO embarked on an endeavour that would change the landscape of broadcast television. Drawing from fantasy author George R. R. Martin’s popular A Song of Ice and Fire book series, the production giant created an epic fantasy series unlike any that had been done before. Game of Thrones quickly became an international phenomenon, breaking records and becoming the “must-see” series of the decade. Everything about the series was a massive draw for viewers – the writing, the acting, the directing, the special effects, everything was expertly crafted with no expense spared.   Game of Thrones ended in 2019, and with it ended a story that had captured imaginations around the world for its scope, breadth, and depth of mythology.

In the world in which Game of Thrones takes place, the fictional land of Westeros is ruled over by the “King of the Andals First Men.” This monarch, seated on the Iron Throne, reigns over the territories known as the Seven Kingdoms. These kingdoms form a loose alliance of provinces that stretched from the far south all the way to the titanic structure of ice in the North known as The Wall. In the great hall of the Red Keep, the King sits upon the Iron Throne, a twisted relic of victory. Aegon the Conqueror had the throne forged from the weapons of those he defeated, supposedly twisting together more than a thousand swords and fusing them with dragon’s fire. Far more than an intimidating place from which the King would pronounce judgement, one significant feature of the Iron Throne is that the blades were kept sharp when the throne was created. Thus, a King would never sit easily on his seat of power, and popular rumour held that any king who cut himself upon the throne was unfit to rule.

Over the years, we have been putting swords aside to create the only real Iron Throne. Made with 29 swords and 60 blades, the Iron Thrones is a massive centre piece which captures the attention of all our visitors at the Darksword shop! 

Inspired by the incredible work of George R. R. Martin,  our take of the Iron Throne will surely impress friends, family, and anyone who watched the most famous television series of this generation.

The first step was to create the base on a flat wood platform, and then replacing that platform with the flat bars of stock metal. The base construction of the first real Iron Throne is a steel frame that was forged out of flat bars of stock metal. After more than 20 years of operations, we had a stock of swords that had not passed inspection due to cosmetic imperfections. These swords formed the seat, arms, sides, and back of the Iron Throne. Each sword was carefully shaped, altered, and placed according to our unique design, which required treating the project like a giant puzzle. Several swords from our “Flame of the Angels” design were placed intact on the back of the throne to mimic the iconic silhouette of this Game of Thrones homage piece. Every member of our team who worked on this project was honored to be involved and pay tribute to George R. R. Martin’s imaginative fantasy series.

was to create the base on a flat wood platform. This allowed us to cut and shape the blades to create the base of the throne. Blades were heated and curved on the anvil while some were cut down to size. The blades were then spot welded (MIG) in place and created from bottom up.

Once assembled, our swords were placed on the throne to create the dramatic look we are all so familiar with. These steps took about two months to complete. Once the throne was made, we decided to age the throne by acid etching and using a mixture of darkening solution and water to acid mark, etch and corrode the blades, giving a stunning, aged, battle worn finish.
